The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence:
“Today, we join the Ukrainian community—here in Canada and around the world—to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.Canada is proud to have been the first western country to recognize Ukraine’s declaration of independence in 1991.
Due to the efforts of the Canadian Polish Congress MB District, a commemoration of Black Ribbon Day took place on 22 August 2016 at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Representatives of the Ukrainian, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak and Latvian communities came together to remember the millions killed by the Soviet and Nazi regimes.

UCC-MPC’s container of supplies for hospitals in Ukraine has been loaded on a train and is heading for Montreal where it will be loaded on a ship headed for Ukraine. While in Toronto, volunteers were able to add a number of additional high value items including 5 electronic patient lifters, 16 mattresses and a number of boxes full of medical supplies. On Saturday June 11, 2016 UCC-MPC Euromaidan Committee met its commitment of sending a container of medical equipment to Ukraine. The container was filled with mostly fully functioning modern hospital beds, which had been obtained and refurbished by International Hope Canada. The container made its way to Toronto. While in there, volunteers were able to add a number of additional high value items including 5 electronic patient lifters, 16 mattresses and a number of boxes full of medical supplies. 15 March 2016 – WINNIPEG. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) expresses its deep sorrow on the passing of former President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Walter Oleh Romaniw, Q.C. Mr. Romaniw served two terms as President of the UCC from 1992-1998. Mr. Romaniw passed away on March 7, 2016.
To mark the 125 Anniversary of the settlement of Ukrainians in Canada on March 10, 2016 the Province of Manitoba proclaimed 2016 The Year of Manitoba’s Ukrainian-Canadian Cultural Heritage. At the March 10th session of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, the Premier of Manitoba Hon. Greg Selinger, read a proclamation which had the support of all parties represented in the House.
On March 10, 2016 the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council held its annual Taras Shevchenko Commemoration on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly. A special guest present was the Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada, Andrii Shevchenko who was accompanied to the event by his spouse, Hanna Homonai.
On May 18, 2017 the world marks the 73rd anniversary of the 1944 deportation of the entire Crimean Tatar – the indigenous people of the Crimean Peninsula – population from their homeland to far-flung regions of the Soviet Union. This criminal act of ethnic cleansing was initiated on the orders of Soviet leader.
On October 24, 2015 the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council organized a one day symposium to mark the unjust Internment of Ukrainian Canadians and others during the First World War. This took place at the Provincial Legislature Building. Later that day, a monument honoring those interned was unveiled on the grounds of the Legislature.
