15 March 2016 – WINNIPEG. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) expresses its deep sorrow on the passing of former President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Walter Oleh Romaniw, Q.C. Mr. Romaniw served two terms as President of the UCC from 1992-1998. Mr. Romaniw passed away on March 7, 2016.
“On behalf of the UCC and our member organizations, I express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late Mr. Romaniw,” stated Paul Grod, President of the UCC. “Our community has suffered a great loss with his passing. Mr. Romaniw was a great leader and a tremendous supporter of the Ukrainian Canadian community and Ukrainian Canadian culture.”
In 2004, Mr. Romaniw was awarded the Shevchenko Medal, the highest form of recognition granted by the UCC, for his outstanding contributions to community development. A leader in promoting Multiculturalism in Canada, Mr. Romaniw was past President of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council.
Mr. Romaniw is survived by his wife Irene; daughter Martha (Jody Klapprat); and grandchildren Sebastian, Madelynne and Nathaniel. The UCC offers them our sincere condolences. We ask God to remember Mr. Romaniw’s family during this difficult time and to grant Mr. Romaniw eternal life in His Heavenly Home.
