UCC-MPC Partners with Christmas Cheer Board to Provide Hampers to Ukrainian Newcomers
Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Manitoba Provincial Council (UCC-MPC) and the Christmas Cheer Board (CCB) is working together to support low-income Ukrainian newcomers families living below the poverty level by providing food hampers, as well as gifts for children 14 years old and under, during the holiday season.

Як нам знати чи дістанемо різдвяний кошик?
- Ті що подалися на різдвяний кошик тільки почують від когось з організації Christmas Cheer Board, або від волонтерів з КУК, якщо є якісь запитання про вашу аплікацію або якщо ви не відповідаєте критеріям щоб дістати кошик (вимоги на Різдвяний кошик через спеціальний процес онлайн аплікації: бути в Канаді за CUAET візою, жити у Вінніпезі, не жити в готелю, бути малозабезпеченим). Тобто, зокрема того якщо ви почуєте від когось, ви можете сподіватися що дістанете кошика.
Що треба робити, якщо ми вибрали що ми підберемо наш кошик?
- Для тих хто написали що підберуть різдвяний кошик, можливо почати підбирати кошики починаюши з 7 грудня аж до 29 грудня (але ми рекомендуємо почекати до наступного тижня, бо організація Christmas Cheer Board ще працює над аплікаціями новоприбулих українців) по адресі 100 – 1821 Wellington Avenue. Що сподіватися, якщо ми вибрали доставку кошика?
- Для тих, що вибрали доставку, волонтери вам привезуть ваш кошик між 7-им та 23-им грудня. Нажаль, вони не дають знати наперед коли приїдуть. Волонтери будуть пробувати доставку 2 рази і, якщо когось вдома не буде обидва рази, вони лишусь записку, що потрібно підібрати кошик самому від будинку організації Christmas Cheer Board. - Для тих, для якого організація Christmas Cheer Board призначила приватного спонсора кошика (це може бути тільки, якщо ви вибрали доставку кошика), ваш спонсор вам подзвонить і домовиться з вами коли вони вам доставлять кошик (це має бути між 10-им та 20-им грудня). How do we know if we will receive a Christmas hamper?
- Those who applied for a Christmas Cheer Board hamper will only hear back from someone at the Christmas Cheer Board, or a UCC volunteer, if there are any questions about your application form, or if you do not qualify for a hamper (eligibility criteria for a hamper through this special online process: hold a CUAET Visa, live in Winnipeg, not be living at a hotel, have low income). Therefore, unless you hear back from someone, you can expect to receive a hamper.
What do we need to do if we selected the option to pick up our hamper?
- For those that indicated that they will be picking up their hamper, hampers can be picked up starting December 7 until December 29 (but we recommend to wait until next week, as the Christmas Cheer Board is still processing Ukrainian newcomer applications). Hampers can be picked up at the Christmas Cheer Board Warehouse at 100 – 1821 Wellington Avenue. What should we expect if we selected the option to have our hamper delivered
- For those that selected the delivery option, volunteer drivers will deliver your hamper between December 7th and 23rd. Unfortunately, they are not able to provide information about when they will be delivering it. Volunteers attempt delivery two times and, if there is no one at home both times, they will leave a note indicating that the hamper must be picked up at the Christmas Cheer Board Warehouse. - For those, who the Christmas Cheer Board paired up with a private hamper sponsor (this could only be applicable if you had selected the delivery option for your hamper), you sponsor will contact you and make arrangements to deliver your hamper (delivery needs to take place between December 10th and 20th). Information about being a sponsor
For Manitobans that are interested in helping out, UCC and the Christmas Cheer Board encourage them to sign up to sponsor a hamper through the Cheer Board’s Feed-A-Family Program, where they can specifically request to be matched with Ukrainian newcomer families. Alternatively, donors may also contribute toys, food, financial resources, or their time, directly to the CCB. More information on ways to help are on the CCB’s website at www.christmascheerboard.ca.
“We are focused on working with the UCC-MPC to help these families in the best way possible,” said Christmas Cheer Board Executive Director Shawna Bell. “The Cheer Board grew out of the needs of families affected by the First World War, over a century ago. The current situation in Ukraine is heartbreaking, but allows the CCB to demonstrate we are steadfastly filling that need all these years later. We hope Manitobans will take up the call to sponsor a family through our Feed-A-Family program and provide comfort and compassion when it is need most.”
“This winter will likely be the coldest one that many Ukrainians have ever experienced,” said UCC-MPC CCB-liaison Mariana Sklepowich. “However, the UCC-MPC and the CCB are determined to bring warmth to Ukrainian newcomers. Through the work of these two organizations, as well as the incredible generosity of Manitobans, I know we’ll be able to do so.”
UCC-MPC President Joan Lewandowsky stated, “I can’t imagine what it must be like for families separated by war. I can imagine it even less during the holiday season, a time we spend with those we love most. That is why the UCC-MPC feels it is so important to partner on this program, to demonstrate that, while Ukrainian families will face one of their greatest challenges this year, they have the support of their newfound Manitoban families holding their hands.”
Tax receipts can be issued by the Christmas Cheer Board for cash donations.
