July 21, 2020. OTTAWA, ON. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) calls on all Canadians to sign the petition to get the word Holodomor included in all major English-language dictionaries.
You can sign the petition here. Help us get the word ‘Holodomor’ included in all major English dictionaries!
“The Holodomor – the Soviet Communist regime’s genocide against the Ukrainian people, in which millions of innocent people were murdered – was covered up and denied by Soviet authorities for decades,” stated Irene Mycak, Chair of the UCC National Holodomor Awareness Committee. “Please join this campaign to assist us in informing the world about this act of genocide. Through awareness and education, we ensure that such crimes are never repeated.”
The petition is part of the #DeepTruth campaign, launched today by the Holodomor National Awareness Tour, in which the UCC is a proud partner.
“Canada, the United States, Ukraine and 14 other countries recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide and honour the victims in an annual day of remembrance on the fourth Saturday in November,” said Bob Onyschuk, Chair of Holodomor National Awareness Tour. “Yet, most people are still largely unaware of the basic facts of one of the greatest crimes of the 20th Century. Having Holodomor added to the dictionary is more than symbolic; it’s an important recognition of this Deep Truth.”
Despite its widespread adoption, the word Holodomor, used to describe the genocide of the Ukrainian people perpetrated by the Soviet-communist regime in 1932-33, is unknown to many, which is why the ultimate goal of the campaign is to have the word “Holodomor” (derived from Ukrainian words meaning “to inflict death by hunger”) added to English-language dictionaries.
